There are more than 120 million adults in the United States living with at least one missing tooth. With multiple options for tooth replacement available, including dentures and dental bridges, dental implants are often the preferred choice for many because of their stable foundation, long lifespan and improved functionality. But the process that is required to receive these prosthetics takes time, including dental implant surgery itself. Keep reading to learn what you can expect on the day of your procedure.

What is Involved in Dental Implant Surgery?

When discussing the dental implant procedure, there are a few different steps that may or may not need to be taken, depending on the status of your jawbone.

During your initial consultation, your dentist will go over the status of your oral health and whether you require additional treatments such as periodontal therapy or even tooth extraction. They will also discuss the health of your jawbone and if there is enough to support your custom restoration. If not, a bone graft or sinus lift will be recommended.

This add-on treatment will add several months to your overall timeline, as your bone will need time to heal. Once the area proves to be more stable, dental implants can then be put into place.

On the day of your procedure, your oral surgeon will start administering local anesthesia. This will ensure you feel no pain during the surgery. The following steps will then take place:

  • One or more incisions will be created in your gums, exposing the underlying bone.
  • Small holes will be created in the bone so that there is room to place the dental implant.
  • The surgeon will position the implant post deep within the bone so that it creates a strong base for your restoration once it has time to fuse with the surrounding tissues.
  • The gum tissue will be closed around the implant, and a protective healing cap will be placed over the top to protect the implant.

How Long Does Dental Implant Surgery Take?

The timeframe for implant placement will vary depending on how many teeth you are missing and how many posts need to be inserted into the jawbone.

On average, it can take 1-2 hours to place each implant. For those missing a single tooth, it can be done much quicker than someone receiving an implant denture, which often requires between four and six dental implants.

No matter how much time is required to successfully place your new teeth, it is well worth the time and money, especially once you see and experience your beautiful smile transformation.
