Today, having your third set of molars removed is looked at as a rite of passage; a time where you get to rest, eat ice cream, and watch Netflix. But does everyone have wisdom teeth? The answer might surprise you!
So, Does Everyone Have Wisdom Teeth?
According to the Dental Research Journal, between 5% and 37% of people are missing one or more of their wisdom teeth. Although there are multiple factors that can play a role (i.e., environment, diet, chewing function), one of the biggest ones is genetics. In other words, if your parents didn’t have their third set of molars come in, you might not either!
Important note: Just because you can’t see your wisdom teeth, doesn’t mean you don’t have them. That’s why it’s important to get annual X-rays: your dental team needs to continuously monitor their development!
When Do Wisdom Teeth Usually Come In?
Typically, the third set of molars emerge between the ages of 16 and 25 (that’s why they have the nickname “wisdom teeth”). However, they often begin to develop under the surface much sooner. If they are going to emerge sideways or there simply isn’t enough room in your mouth, then your dentist will refer you to an oral surgeon to have them removed.
When Should I Get My Wisdom Teeth Removed?
At your biannual dental checkups and cleanings, your dental team will monitor the development of your wisdom teeth. If they grow in straight, there is enough room in your mouth, and you aren’t in any pain, then you may not need to get them removed. If, on the other hand, they are difficult to clean, you’re experiencing chronic jaw pain, or your surrounding teeth and gums are being negatively affected, then it’s time to have them taken out.
Does Having Your Wisdom Teeth Removed Hurt?
Whether you have all of your wisdom teeth or only one of them, the first step of the extraction process is always the same: thoroughly numbing your mouth. That way, you don’t feel anything more than some slight pressure from your oral surgeon working. You’ll be given aftercare instructions to help you heal comfortably as well, including taking OTC pain medication (as directed), using a cold compress for 10 minutes at a time, and sticking to soft foods.
